March 11, 2024 by Rusty

Fraser Island holds a captivating secret for some of the best viewings of Humpback whales in the world.

Fraser Island, located off the Queensland coast offers a front-row seat to witness the awe-inspiring annual migration of humpback whales.

With its pristine waters and breathtaking landscapes, this World Heritage-listed island has become a sanctuary for these majestic creatures.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Can you see whales from Fraser Island?” prepare to be amazed.

Is It Possible To See Whales on Fraser Island?

  • Yes, you can see whales from Fraser Island
  • You can witness them from many different locations around the island
  • You can also go on a private tour boat to the island to see them close up
Calm water of Platypus bay

The crystal clear waters of Platypus Bay

The waters of Platypus Bay are the best place to spot them from the land or a boat. Once you are on the Fraser you can drive by 4WD to this western side of the island.

You will need to allow a full day and possibly arrange to have a few nights in the area around Orchid Beach or Waddy Point.

Some tourists prefer to see the Whales via a boat tour from Hervey Bay that will take you across to Fraser and into Platypus Bay. This is a great alternative if you only have time for a day trip and Whales are on your bucket list.

As Hervey Bay is on the mainland of Australia and is located close to Fraser Island, it is commonly known as the whale-watching capital of the world.

From July to November, the calm waters are sheltered by Fraser Island and attract the whales.

This provides a booming industry for boat tour operators to allow tourists ample opportunities for whale sightings.

Should you already be on the island you have a heap of options and viewing spots to see these creatures in their natural habitat, frolicking and breaching with their calves in crystal-clear waters.

Whales can also be spotted from the shores of Fraser Island, so keep a lookout as you drive along the shore. Particularly along 75 Mile Beach.

Indian Head is also a great place to sit and watch them pass by close to the headland. It offers a breathtaking view of the whales from this high point of rocky headland.

This point is located North along 75 Mile Beach. Approx 1.5 hour’s drive from Eurong depending on tides.

Indian Head lookout

Another great place for Viewing is at Waddy Point. It is a smaller headland, further northwest of Indian Head near Orchid Beach. It has a short climb to the top but you will have some amazing ocean views to see the whales.

So, if you are planning to drive or stay up at Orchid Beach, this would be an advantageous spot to set up with a picnic for a few hours and watch them pass by.

What Is The Best Time Of The Year To See Whales?

The best time of year to see whales on Fraser Island is from late July to early November. During this time, thousands of humpback whales migrate to the calm waters around Fraser Island, making it Australia’s premier whale-watching destination.

The peak whale season is typically between early August and late September, offering the best chances to witness these magnificent creatures in action.

What Type Of Whales Can You See on Fraser Island?

When whale watching on Fraser Island, you will primarily see humpback whales.

These magnificent creatures embark on one of the longest migrations in the animal kingdom, travelling from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to the warmer waters of the Great Barrier Reef to breed and give birth to their calves.

Humpback whales are known for their acrobatic displays, including breaching, tail slapping, and pectoral fin waving, making for an exhilarating whale-watching experience.

While humpback whales are the main attraction, other species of whales, such as southern right whales, minke whales, and even occasionally blue whales, can also be spotted in the waters around Fraser Island.

However, humpback whales steal the show with their sheer size, playful nature, and impressive behaviours.
